The Anointing of the Sick is considered the seventh sacrament instituted by Jesus Christ. Once known as “Last Rites” or “Extreme Unction”, this anointing is properly understood to be a sacrament of healing for the sick or the dying. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, anointings were regularly celebrated during Sunday Mass. The sacrament remains accessible to individuals by request and may be celebrated in private homes, hospices, care-homes and hospitals.
